Census Estimate of Illegal Alien Population Drops

“New census data released Thursday affirm a clear and sustained drop in illegal immigration, ending more than a decade of increases. The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. dropped to an estimated 11.1 million last year from a peak of 12 million in 2007, part of an overall waning of Hispanic immigration. For the first time since 1910, Hispanic immigration last year was topped by immigrants from Asia,” Politico reports.

Immigration Is Not A Cure All for an Aging Population

“A new analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the Center for Immigration Studies projects the impact of immigration on the size and composition of the U.S. population. The findings reveal that immigration makes for a much larger overall population while having only a minimal effect on slowing the aging of American society,” CIS says in a press release.

“The fundamental question for the American public and policy makers is whether a much larger population and the resulting greater population density will add to or diminish the quality of life in the United States. Immigration is a discretionary policy of the government and can be changed. These projections show us one possible future. We must decide as a country if this is the future we want.”

Senate Democrats Block STEM Bill

“Democrats in the Senate on Wednesday blocked consideration of a bill Republicans passed last week in the House of Representatives that would give 55,000 permanent resident visas to foreigners graduating from American universities with advanced degrees in science or technology,” the New York Times writes.

The Crazy Logic of Amnesty

“Just two short years ago Barack Obama referred to Republicans as “the enemy” on immigration reform. Now, establishment Republicans seem to think if they simply abandon all principle on immigration policy they will be beloved by Hispanic voters, miraculously closing the massive voting gap,” says Kate Obenshain in Human Events.

“There is plenty of anecdotal, as well as exit-poll data revealing that while the vilifying had an impact, the real impediment to Republicans connecting with Hispanic voters was not the Republican position on illegal immigration, but rather the concern that Republicans want to somehow gut entitlement programs. That is not remedied by offering amnesty.”

Are Immigrants Healthier?

“The robust good health of newly arrived Mexican immigrants is an article of faith among public health experts–as is the notion that the longer they are in the United States, the unhealthier they become. But the idea that emigrating to the United States is bad for a newcomer’s health–possibly because he departs from the healthful eating and exercise habits of his home country–has a major flaw in it, a new study says: These immigrants may not be so healthy to begin with,” the LA Times says.

“The longer they’re in the United States, in other words, the more likely it is that these immigrants’ heretofore undiagnosed conditions will be discovered and, hopefully, treated.”
