USCIS Head Under Investigation for Political Intervention in Visa Case

“U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas, who has been nominated to be the deputy secretary of Homeland Security – and who could soon run the department – is under investigation by the department’s inspector general . . . [A][source said investigators are looking into whether Mayorkas had assisted in securing an investor visa – which had previously been denied twice – on behalf of Gulf Coast Funds Management,” Reuters reports.

“Gulf Coast Funds Management is run by Anthony Rodham, the brother of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. If confirmed as deputy secretary of Homeland Security, Mayorkas would likely run the department on an acting basis following the September departure of Secretary Janet Napolitano, who is leaving to run the University of California.”

House Dems Want Amnesty Now Due to Election Year Politics

“House Democratic leaders warned Tuesday that Congress must enact immigration reform this year because the task becomes much more difficult in the 2014 election year. ‘We’ve seen how in an election year it’s very difficult to get a lot done, and that’s unfortunate,’ Rep. Xavier Becerra (Calif.), chairman of the Democratic Caucus, told reporters in the Capitol. ‘You hope that we can get things done next year, whether or not there’s an election at hand. We should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time,'” The Hill writes.

“Congress leaves Washington on Aug. 2 for a five-week August vacation. The House has scheduled only nine legislative days in September, when much of the political oxygen will be consumed by efforts to fund the federal government before the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.”
