For those who advocate adhering to the nation’s immigration laws, there’s long been the perception that the pro-enforcement side of the immigration debate would always get short shrift at the New York Times. Now the grip of Wokeism that forces staffers into complete adherence to open borders and other hardline leftist ideologies at the Times has been made public for all to see.
Bari Weiss, who until recently was one of the rising young stars of the Times’ opinion pages, publicly resigned from the paper on Tuesday, charging her employment there had become untenable because of her refusal to adhere to an ever more pervasive Woke ideology.
Ms. Weiss’ letter addresses the increasingly rigid Woke standards at the New York Times, but as anyone who reads or views what is euphemistically called the “mainstream media” knows, ideological orthodoxy is not unique to the Grey Lady. Though she does not cite immigration coverage in her resignation letter, it has become increasingly clear that the Times and other elitist media outlets are not reporting news, but disseminating propaganda. “A new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else,” Weiss wrote.
Mass immigration, open borders, and furious opposition to any manner of enforcement is one of the most strictly enforced orthodoxies at the Times and other similarly-minded media organizations where the “enlightened few” view it as their mission to inform, or perhaps more accurately, indoctrinate everyone else.
“As the ethics and mores of [Twitter] have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space,” Weiss continues. “Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions.”
What is important is that this conclusion can no longer be dismissed as paranoia about the “mainstream media” on the part of the folks Hillary Clinton labeled “Deplorables.” It is coming from not just one of their own, but one of their anointed who refused to go along with the charade that what is being practiced at the Times is journalism. With increasing frequency it is indoctrination.
Perhaps more people who share Ms. Weiss’ integrity and value the importance of objective journalism will follow her lead and we can return to a standard where journalists report the news about immigration and other important issues rather than tailor it to conform to the Woke views of “the narrowest of audiences.”
