{"id":14772,"date":"2017-08-09T16:46:06","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T20:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/?p=14772"},"modified":"2018-12-28T12:41:26","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T17:41:26","slug":"flummoxed-facts-immigration-lobby-doubles-bad-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/2017\/08\/09\/flummoxed-facts-immigration-lobby-doubles-bad-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Flummoxed by Facts, Immigration Lobby Doubles Down on Bad Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/economic-blame-game-immigration-and-unemployment\" target=\"_blank\">fact sheet<\/a>&#8221; from the American Immigration Council peddles the shopworn argument that the U.S. economy needs more immigrants. In fact, AIC is spreading dangerous myths that defy logic and undercut American workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no direct correlation between immigration and unemployment,\u201d the immigration promoters proclaim.<\/p>\n<p>Try shopping that trope in Realityville, where most Americans live.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four fundamental facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A record 95 million working-age Americans are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/susan-jones\/record-95102000-americans-not-labor-force-number-grew-18-obama-took-office\" target=\"_blank\">out of the job market<\/a>. Many of those millions have been pushed out by stagnating wages depressed by low-cost imported labor and diminished opportunities, particularly on the lower rungs of the economic ladder.<\/li>\n<li>From 2000-2014, <em>all <\/em>of the net increase in U.S. employment <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/All-Employment-Growth-2000-Went-Immigrants\" target=\"_blank\">effectively went to immigrants<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>While AIC plumps for looser immigration laws, it ignores the fact that 11 million working-age immigrants are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/381304\/work-job-americans-wont-do-steven-camarota\" target=\"_blank\"><em>not<\/em> working<\/a>. So much for the notion that immigrants bring skills that are in high demand by U.S. employers.<\/li>\n<li>The ongoing, massive influx of immigrants comes at increasing cost to the public. In the past two years, Los Angeles County issued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2017\/08\/03\/la-made-1-3b-in-illegal-immigrant-welfare-payouts-in-just-2-years.amp.html\" target=\"_blank\">$1.3 billion in welfare payments<\/a> to illegal immigrants, nearly one-quarter of its total payouts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Open-border enthusiasts at AIC tout \u201cwelcoming\u201d immigration policies ranging from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairus.org\/sanctuary-policies-across-the-us\" target=\"_blank\">sanctuary cities<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/2017\/07\/21\/running-dream-ags-make-case-daca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)<\/a>, to a host of skilled- and unskilled-work permits that can lead to green cards (permanent residence). These programs have facilitated a record inflow of migrants \u2013 legal and illegal.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s not to like? Corporate chieftains get more consumers and politicians can pander for more votes. Inside their gated communities, financial and cultural elites \u2013 like those at AIC &#8212; hire inexpensive maids and dirt-cheap landscapers while enjoying ever-expanding menus of trendy ethnic cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, more American workers are pink-slipped and John Q. Taxpayer gets fleeced. The economic chasm between rich and poor widens to Gilded Age proportions and the middle class shrinks under the onslaught.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, automation will make the continued importation of low- and semi-skilled labor inefficient, counterproductive and burdensome.<\/p>\n<p>AIC doesn\u2019t acknowledge any of this in its fact sheet. Rather, the council advocates doubling down on bad policies while bringing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/about\/our-mission\" target=\"_blank\">cutting-edge lawsuits\u201d<\/a> on behalf of immigrants.
