{"id":16707,"date":"2018-03-22T16:15:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T20:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/?p=16707"},"modified":"2018-12-28T10:43:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T15:43:20","slug":"abolishing-ice-indecent-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/2018\/03\/22\/abolishing-ice-indecent-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Abolishing ICE is Such an Indecent Proposal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/its-time-to-abolish-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Nation<\/em><\/a> ran a piece calling for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).\u00a0 According to the left-leaning publication, \u201cA mass-deportation strike force is incompatible with democracy and human rights.\u201d And the harebrained idea instantly gained traction among the luminaries of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are a few serious problems with <em>The Nation\u2019s<\/em> indecent proposal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ICE isn\u2019t a \u201cmass deportation strike force\u201d; that\u2019s hyperbolic nonsense. In actuality, it\u2019s a federal agency responsible for preventing terrorism and combating the illegal movement of people and goods. It\u2019s mission overlaps significantly with that of the FBI, DEA and U.S. Marshals. There\u2019s nothing particularly sinister about ICE.<\/li>\n<li>Far from being incompatible with democracy, ICE\u2019s Document and Benefit Fraud Task Forces actually help to ensure the integrity of the democratic process by targeting people who use using fake driver&#8217;s licenses, birth certificates, Social Security cards, and passports to illegally obtain benefits in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>No country in the world recognizes a \u201chuman right\u201d to cross the borders of another nation without authorization. As the Supreme Court of the United States has repeatedly observed, every sovereign nation has the power to forbid the entry of foreigners and to prescribe the conditions under which foreign nationals may be admitted.<\/li>\n<li>The Supreme Court has also repeatedly held that deportation is the \u201cappropriate and lawful means\u201d of returning those unlawfully present in the U.S. to their own countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, what would happen if ICE were shut down? Let\u2019s take a look at what ICE accomplishes in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/doclib\/news\/library\/factsheets\/pdf\/day-in-life-ero.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average day<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrests more than 400 immigration violators and puts them in removal proceedings.<\/li>\n<li>Manages 1.71 million aliens in various stages of removal proceedings.<\/li>\n<li>Physically removes anywhere from 600 to 1,200 illegal aliens from the United States.<\/li>\n<li>Makes 90 criminal arrests, pursuant to the 400 federal statutes it enforces.<\/li>\n<li>Removes 14 gang members from American streets.<\/li>\n<li>Makes 32 narcotics enforcement arrests.<\/li>\n<li>Seizes hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs.<\/li>\n<li>Opens two new terrorism investigations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The numbers make it pretty clear that anyone who cares about the safety and security of the United States would never suggest abolishing ICE.
