Everyone at FAIR sends our condolences to the family of the Border Patrol agent killed yesterday and also our wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured agent. In other news, is a one percent decline in “immigrant entrepreneurship” a sign of imminent economic trouble? Apparently so if the STEM visa lobby is to be believed. Perhaps if the business climate were better more Americans would be willing to try starting a new business.

Senate Report Slams DHS Fusion Centers Project

“A scathing bipartisan Senate report assailed the Department of Homeland Security for overseeing a network of supposed intelligence-sharing centers that, according to the study, did little to track or disrupt terrorist threats.

‘The fusion centers often produced irrelevant, useless or inappropriate intelligence reporting to DHS, and many produced no intelligence reporting whatsoever,’ the report said,” Fox News reports.

Immigrants Involved in Fewer Startups Means the Sky is Falling?

“For the first time in decades, the rate of skilled immigrants starting businesses in high-tech industries in the U.S. has plateaued, according to a new report released today by the Kauffman Foundation. The study, based on responses from 1,882 startups founded after 2005, shows that the proportion of those ventures founded by immigrants nationwide slipped from 25.3 percent in 2006 to 24.3 percent today. In Silicon Valley, it declined from 52.4 percent to 43.9 percent during the same period,” BusinessWeek reports.

Ad Ties Immigration Issue to Jobs for African-Americans

“‘I’m tired of the stereotype that black Americans don’t want to work,’ an African-American man says in an ad [by NumbersUSA]‘I’ve worked hard my whole life but I got laid off and I’ve got mouths to feed. I need a job. What I don’t understand is why our leaders are going to admit another million immigrant workers next year to take jobs when 3 million black Americans can’t find work. I mean, do our leaders really believe that black Americans don’t want to work? Let’s slow down mass immigration and save jobs for Americans — all Americans.” The Hill has more coverage here.

Illegal Alien Drug User Surprised by Deportation

“ICE is paying Sacramento County $100 a day to house [Juan Carlos] Rivera, who has been convicted of several misdemeanors but no felonies since his parents brought him here illegally from Mexico at age 14,” the Sacramento Bee reports. “Rivera’s lawyers argue that their client should qualify for prosecutorial discretion, an Obama administration policy that closes deportation cases against undocumented immigrants who haven’t committed serious crimes and pose no threat to society. ‘This guy was riding his bicycle after smoking dope,’ said attorney Lori M. Porter. ‘He doesn’t seem like a priority prisoner. He’s working, paying into Social Security and paying withholding taxes.'”

[FAIR comment: Working illegally is being cited by his attorney as a sign of good character.]

Ruben Navarrette Jr.: Self-Deportation is Better Than Official Deportation

“Allow me to say a few words in defense of a concept that is so simple and so steeped in common sense that it shouldn’t need defending: the self-deportation of illegal immigrants. The idea that those who can’t find work in the United States would decide to cut their losses and head home is infinitely more humane than what occurs now when the heavy-handed federal government takes it upon itself to aggressively arrest, detain and remove illegal immigrants,” says Ruben Navarrette Jr.

“Now Mitt Romney is saying much the same thing, but he is doing a horrible job of getting his point across. It comes off sounding as though he wants to make the lives of illegal immigrants so intolerable that they in turn save us the trouble of removing them and simply leave on their own.”

Two Border Patrol Agents Shot, One Killed, in Arizona

“One Border Patrol Agent is dead and another wounded after being shot in the southern Arizona border area near Naco, Arizona, early Tuesday morning. The agents were shot while on patrol near the newly opened Brian A Terry Border Patrol Station which was named and dedicated for the agent murdered in December 2010 by a weapon involved in the Fast and Furious debacle,” the Examiner reported.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer issued a statement that said, in part, “What happens next has become all-too-familiar in Arizona. Flags will be lowered in honor of the slain agent. Elected officials will vow to find those responsible. Arizonans and Americans will grieve, and they should. But this ought not only be a day of tears. There should be anger, too. Righteous anger — at the kind of evil that causes sorrow this deep, and at the federal failure and political stalemate that has left our border unsecured and our Border Patrol in harm’s way.”
