President Obama believes a second term will give him the flexibility to get an amnesty passed. Some of this is election year rhetoric – Obama promised amnesty during the last campaign – but the reality is likely to be more executive usurpation of Congress’ power over immigration policy.

ACLU Sues DHS for Details of Georgia Enforcement

“The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights and the ACLU of Georgia filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to force U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to disclose information on the immigration-related actions of Georgia’s law enforcement agencies,” Fox News Latino says.

“The plaintiffs contend the ICE files would enable them to determine the truth of allegations that Georgia’s state and local police are engaging in racial profiling and other abuses in the context of immigration enforcement.”

Obama Says He’s “Confident” of Amnesty in 2nd Term

“President Obama says he is “confident” that, if reelected, he will oversee passage of immigration reform next year, in part because Republicans will have an interest in reaching out to a growing Latino voting bloc they have “alienated” in recent years,” CBS News reports.

“Mr. Obama made the comment in an off-the-record phone conversation with the publisher and editor of the Des Moines Register days ahead of that newspaper’s scheduled announcement of an endorsement in the presidential race. After the Register’s editor publicly argued that the 30-minute conversation should be available to all voters, the Obama campaign released the transcript.”

Bloomberg Editors Endorse Skill Based Immigration

“It would be hard to exaggerate the lunacy of the U.S.’s rules on skilled immigrants. We know of no other advanced economy that skews its policies so severely against the workers in greatest demand. Most countries see themselves as competing to attract that kind of immigrant, recognizing that human capital is an important driver of economic success,” Bloomberg News says in an editorial.

“Cold political calculations by both parties are holding back reform. House Republicans arranged a floor vote last month on a measure that would have offered more residency visas to immigrants with advanced science, technology, engineering and math degrees, but set it up to fail by reducing the number of visas overall (which Democrats oppose).”

200,000 Obama Amnesty Applications And Counting

“Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on Wednesday that more than 3,000 young illegal immigrants are applying for deferred deportation every day under the administration’s new immigration policy,” The Hill reports.

“About 200,000 young people in the country illegally have applied to defer their deportation for at least two years and get a temporary work permit since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began accepting applications under the new rules two months ago, according to Napolitano.”
