Marylanders will have the chance to reverse the granting of in-state tuition to illegal aliens this election. After a strong effort to collect signatures, the action of the legislature is up for a popular vote via referendum.

Driving the American Way

“A Washington Post article earlier this month about immigrants and driving provides interesting fodder for thought, and unknowingly provides some support to the notion — better, the reality — that immigration is primarily a cultural phenomenon and cannot be understood simply in terms of economics, or even social justice. There are those who, in the debate about immigration, legal and illegal, conveniently prefer to ignore the cultural impact of large numbers of newcomers: newcomers who are not American, who are not familiar with American ways of interacting, American social expectations, or American traditions,” says Dominique Peridans at the CIS blog.

DREAM Act Debated With Maryland Vote Pending

“On Nov. 6, Maryland voters will decide whether to extend the in-state tuition discount at the state’s public collegesand universities to some undocumented students. To qualify, students must have been brought to the United States as children, have attended at least three years of high school in Maryland, and come from families that have filed state tax returns, among other requirements,” the Balitmore Sun reports.

“Legislative analysts estimate that the measure would cost Maryland $3.5 million per year. But some researchers say the students will get better jobs if they go to college and eventually pay millions more in taxes. The proposal was approved last year by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat. But opponents mounted the state’s first successful petition drive in two decades, gathering more than 108,000 signatures to suspend the law and let the voters decide.”

Michelle Obama Stars In Immigration Ad

“First lady Michelle Obama is featured in a new campaign ad for her husband aimed at reaching Latino voters. The Spanish-language ad shows Obama talking to Cristina Saralegui, who hosts her own show on Univision. The first lady tells Saralegui, known as the “Spanish Oprah,” why it is important for Latinos to vote,” USA Today reports.
