It seems that the debate over immigration is going to remain heated after this election. The main focus of voters who voted for Romney was the economy. People who were happy or at least not unhappy tended to vote for the incumbent, the same as in previous presidential elections.

Ruben Navarrette Jr. – Voters Loyal, Not Logical

“Because Latinos are intensely brand loyal to the Democratic Party, only Republicans are punished for misbehaving. Both parties need a spanking. Most Latinos don’t seem troubled by the fact that Democrats are running an elaborate con game on them — pursuing the party’s interest (keeping organized labor happy by stalling immigration reform, which would create competition for jobs by legalizing illegal immigrants) while portraying loudmouth but largely powerless Republicans as the obstacle,” says Ruben Navarrette Jr.

“So, the day after the election, supporters of the president found themselves circulating contradictory narratives. When it comes to punishing Republicans, we are told, Latino voters care only about immigration. But when they have the chance to punish Democrats, well, suddenly they care about other issues beyond immigration. I said they were loyal, not logical.”

Sen. Graham Says Amnesty is the Way Out

“Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) on Thursday pushed his colleagues to take up immigration reform, taking to Twitter to call for a comprehensive solution. ‘It’s important for our country to solve illegal immigration once and for all. We must deal with the issue firmly and fairly,’ he tweeted,” The Hill reports.

“Graham authored a 2010 immigration reform bill with Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) . The proposal included strengthened border security, a system for admitting temporary workers and a path to legalization for those immigrants already in the country.”

Taking Apart the Logic of Amnesty

“Mark Levin responds to calls from conservative commentators, like Charles Krauthammer, to grant amnesty to illegal immigration in order to entice Hispanics to vote Republican. Levin explains why this won’t work and what a slippery slope amnesty would be,” says Real Clear Politics about an excerpt of Levin’s show they posted.

Jobs, Not Immigration, Behind Romney’s Performance

“The election was about the economy. The great untold story of the current downturn is that what little job growth there’s been has largely gone to immigrants. Government data show that two-thirds of employment growth since the president took office went to immigrants, legal and illegal,” says Steven Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies.

“In fact, for more than a decade, most of the employment growth has been going to immigrants. As immigration has grown, the share of working-age Americans (18 to 65) holding a job has declined — from 76% in 2000 to 69% now. Incomes have also declined over the past decade.”
