Sens. Schumer, Graham Back With Amnesty Plan

“Two senators on opposite sides of the aisle are proposing comprehensive changes to the immigration laws that would include a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants now in the United States,” the AP reports.

“Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York and Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who promoted similar proposals on separate Sunday news shows said that no path to citizenship would be available until the country’s borders were secure.”

Compromise Discussions Met With Concern

“Anxiety is rising in the bases of both political parties about the deals their leaders might strike on fiscal policy and immigration in the months after the election,” The Hill reports.

“President Obama and Republican leaders in Congress have struck a conciliatory tone since Election Day, pledging to work together on issues like the “fiscal cliff” and immigration reform.”

Border Patrol Director Says More Infrastructure Needed at Crossings

Pete Flores, director of the San Diego Field Office for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, says more investment is needed at border crossings with Mexico.

“We are locked in facilities built 15, 20 years ago. In this last fiscal year (2012), we processed over 64 million people in this field office, and these ports of entry just weren’t built to handle that traffic. At San Ysidro, we see about 35,000 to 40,000 vehicles a day coming through and an additional 24,000 to 27,000 pedestrians.”

Economics Trumps Immigration or Social Issues for Hispanic Voters

“For right-wing Beltway pundits, many of whom were already more pro-immigration than their party’s grassroots, the answer is obvious: cut a deal that gives illegal immigrants a path to citizenship; eliminate immigration as a wedge issue and watch Hispanics embrace the GOP,” says Peter Beinart at The Daily Beast.

“So what’s the real reason Hispanics aren’t voting Republican? Economics. And some conservatives know it.”
