But police\nofficers told FAIR they got a heads up that 1,200 more Congolese were en route\nfrom the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to being ravaged by a bloody civil war, the DRC is also wracked by one of the deadliest <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2019\/05\/1039051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Ebola outbreaks<\/a> in history, with more than 2,000 cases reported in the last 10 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fleeing the chaos and\ndisease, migrants said they left their Central African homeland for Brazil\nbefore turning north toward the U.S. The\nrefugees who arrived in the Alamo City reportedly traveled with a group through\nEcuador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While San Antonio and local charities raise $14,000 for bus tickets to send the Congolese deeper into the U.S. interior, the situation again highlights the pressing need for <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/latino\/447325-what-is-a-safe-third-country-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">safe third-country agreements.<\/a> Under such accords, asylum seekers are required to apply for protection in the country where they first land &#8212; not the country where they ultimately want to settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reaching a safe\nthird-country pact with Mexico is a top priority for the Trump administration,\nand it ought to be.
