Maine\u2019s Business Leaders Have Got You Beat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The headline of a <a href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2019\/12\/12\/opinion\/contributors\/maine-needs-immigrants-to-avert-an-economic-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Bangor Daily News op-ed reads<\/a>, \u201cMaine needs immigrants to avert an economic crisis.\u201d The opinion piece penned by the executive director of the Maine Business Immigration Coalition is a passionate plea for Congress to declare amnesty for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals beneficiaries before the Supreme Court rules on whether President Trump has the constitutional authority to do away with a policy implemented by his predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery year, DACA recipients contribute nearly $4 million to\nMaine\u2019s GDP,\u201d notes Beth Stickney. Let\u2019s take her word for that. But even in a\nsmall state like Maine, the loss of $4 million hardly seems to rise to the\nlevel of \u201can economic crisis.\u201d Turns out, even if every DACA recipient in Maine\nwere to suddenly disappear, the impact would fall far short of a glitch, much\nless a crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to state data, Maine\u2019s 2018 GDP was <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/MENGSP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">just shy of $65 billion<\/a>, pegging the potential financial hit that might occur if DACA is ended at less than 1\/100th of 1 percent. There is a reasonable degree of subjectivity in determining what actually constitutes a crisis, economic or otherwise. But, really, 1\/100th of 1 percent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Potential economic harm is one of the key arguments used by\nillegal alien advocates in the current Supreme Court case seeking to keep the president\nfrom repealing DACA. Obviously, they thought this was one of their strongest\narguments for keeping the program in place.
