{"id":22874,"date":"2020-04-27T11:01:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T15:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/?p=22874"},"modified":"2020-04-27T11:01:24","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T15:01:24","slug":"illegal-immigrants-workers-media-immigrationreform-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/2020\/04\/27\/illegal-immigrants-workers-media-immigrationreform-com\/","title":{"rendered":"Interactive Blog: Rate This Video Clip Crediting Legal and Illegal Immigration for \u201cFlattening This Curve\u201d in Agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This <em>Washington Times<\/em> article contains a recent clip from \u201cThe View,\u201d \u2013 featuring Republican strategist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ana_Navarro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Ana Navarro<\/a> \u2013 arguing that \u201cillegal immigration slows the spread of the coronavirus,\u201d and that if it wasn\u2019t for both legal and illegal aliens working in agriculture, the nation would be starving. The crux of her argument is a vilification of President Trump\u2019s recent Executive Order (EO) on immigration (which, in fact, does very little to curtail immigration). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheView\/status\/1253118891942801410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">video.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I\u2019m going to offer some commentary about\nthe strength of Navarro\u2019s arguments based on her use of facts, personal\nexpertise and citing credible third party experts familiar with either\nagriculture or immigration. Finally, I\u2019ll grade Navarro\u2019s effectiveness on\nusing logic to move public opinion in her direction, and then will ask readers\nto offer comments and a grade as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Navarro\ncalls this EO nothing more than \u201ca political point,\u201d noting that Trump has\nrepeatedly used immigration as an \u201cattack\u201d issue since 2016 and he hasn\u2019t\nstopped doing that since. This EO was first sold to the public by the president in a Tweet as a way of helping American workers and ensuring the nation isn\u2019t importing more of the\ncoronavirus (like we did from China and Europe) while we\u2019re in the middle of\nthis pandemic.&nbsp; Simply attempting to\nregulate the flow of immigrants and foreign workers into the country at a time\nof an unprecedented unemployment and health crisis is not attacking immigrants,\nany more than plugging a hole in a leaking dam is anti-water. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Navarro\ncorrectly cites the fact that there are many hardworking and successful\nimmigrants in the U.S. who are not only achieving their American dream but also\nmaking the U.S. a better place to live. That has nothing to do with this EO,\nwhich only pauses admissions of a relatively small number of\npeople who are currently outside of the U.S. and awaiting their green\ncards.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Navarro implies that all of the fruit on our tables, the milk in our refrigerators, is there \u201cprobably because there are immigrants, undocumented immigrants in the fields of America.\u201d\u00a0 Again, this EO has zero impact on legal or illegal aliens who are already here. But to imply that they are responsible for feeding the nation is an enormous stretch of the truth.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/03\/16\/immigrants-dont-make-up-a-majority-of-workers-in-any-u-s-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Pew Research<\/a> \u2013 which is certainly not a right wing research firm, immigrants, legal and illegal combined, don\u2019t make up a majority of workers in any U.S. industry.\u00a0 In agriculture, 66 percent of the workforce is American. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The\nonly person who is demagoguing this issue is Navarro herself. Capitulating\nto pressure from business lobbyists, the EO\ncompletely exempts all foreign guest worker programs, including those used by\nfarmers, who continue to rely on this modern form of indentured servitude to\nharvest some of the nation\u2019s crops. Without these massive guest worker programs\n\u2013 that clearly take jobs from Americans and, unless a testing regimen is in\nplace, could import more coronavirus into the U.S. \u2013 much of American\nagriculture harvesting would have mechanized by now, much like most of the\nagriculture in Europe. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Finally,\nNavarro completely fails to establish herself as a credible advocate. Yes, I\nknow she\u2019s an immigrant, but that certainly doesn\u2019t give her any instant street\ncred on the immigration issue as it applies to agriculture. My mother spent\nseveral early years of her life in an orphanage, but has never claimed to be an\nexpert on adoption or running a children\u2019s home. Navarro cites no data, no\nexperts, nothing.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>As\nfor my personal credibility on this issue and my critique of Navarro: I\u2019m an\nagriculture economist who has worked on farms both in the U.S. and abroad and\nhas spent 30 years in the immigration debate studying this issue. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grade<\/strong>: Remember, you\u2019re not grading Navarro on\nwhether or not you agree with her, but rather how well she does of swaying the\npublic to agree with her on this issue.
