Latest Sequester Scare: Napolitano Says DHS Releasing Detainees

“The White House has pulled out all the stops to paint a dire portrait of the sequester’s across-the-board budget cuts. In fact, the administration has made one budget cutback even before the sequester has taken effect: Citing the ongoing fiscal pressures, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has released an unspecified number of immigrants in deportation proceedings from immigrant detention facilities,” the Washington Post writes.

John O’Sullivan: Borking Conservatives on Immigration

John O’Sullivan tells Mario H. Lopez that he is wrong to try to ‘Bork’ conservatives on immigration because liberals oppose amnesty as well. “You are alleging that immigration hawks are not conservatives and don’t deserve conservative allies because some of them are (coercive) population controllers. In order to make this stick logically, you would have to demonstrate that there are no conservative grounds for a policy of lower immigration and no conservative immigration hawks who are not also population controllers. You don’t demonstrate that, and you can’t do so, because there are many such conservative arguments…”

Illegal Alien Lobby Tries to Avoid Marches

“While immigrant advocates plan waves of demonstrations and other events in coming weeks to keep the pressure on Congress to introduce a bipartisan immigration-reform bill as soon as possible, they say they’ve learned from past mistakes when their protests provoked a backlash,” the Arizona Republic says.

“The events, which include calls to members of Congress, a multistate bus tour and a pro-immigration-reform demonstration at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., mark a significant change in tactics from 2006, when hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants and supporters marched through cities around the country in support of reforms allowing illegal immigrants to gain legal status.”

Too Soon to Say if Iowans Like Rubio Plan

“Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) was noncommittal on Saturday when asked if Hawkeye State conservatives will warm to Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) immigration plan. ‘Well I don’t know that they know enough about it yet,’ Branstad said in an interview with The Huffington Post. When pressed on whether Rubio’s plan might fall flat in the state that plays such a crucial role in the Republican primary nominating process, Branstad hesitated. ‘Well, I don’t know,’ he said.”

4 Reasons Guest Worker Plans Fail

“One of the most important components of any immigration reform bill will be how the immigration system will be changed to deal with future waves of immigrant workers in manual labor sectors. Last week, leaders from business and labor came to an agreement in principle that will likely serve as a guideline for any legislation in Congress. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO are calling for the creation of a new visa for what they’re calling ‘lesser-skilled workers,'” ABC News says.

“Here are some of the ways that guest worker programs have failed in the past, and how the newly proposed visa might do better.”
