Saving Rand Paul from Himself

“[Sen. Rand] Paul delivers his liberty-oriented message with a finesse his father never had. His 13-hour filibuster showed that despite being more mainstream than his father, he still has the unwavering principles that drew millions of supporters to the Ron Paul campaign. However, his announcement yesterday in support of amnesty for illegal aliens will end all the dreams many of his ardent supporters had of a future President Paul,” says Ryan James Girdusky at the Washington Times.

“There is a great irony that for all of Congressman Ron Paul’s unmovable positions that were rooted in libertarian philosophy, the one issue where he broke away from the ideology was immigration. Throughout his career in Congress, Ron stood firmly opposed to amnesty and birthright citizenship.”

Obama Administration Met With Anti-Detention Groups Prior to Release

“The Office of the Public Advocate for the US Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) held a series of “community roundtables” with numerous left-wing groups that have been lobbying the Obama administration for years to reduce the detainee population in ICE facilities because those groups believe that the Obama has been arresting, holding, and deporting far too many illegal aliens. These roundtables were held regularly for three months prior to the release of several thousand suspected illegal aliens from a number of ICE facilities in February 2013,” says Michael Volpe at Front Page Magazine.

“Lorenzen-Strait has been the Public Advocate at ICE since that position was created by the Obama administration in February 2012. Ostensibly, he’s supposed to represent the public, but in reality, no less than the Huffington Post acknowledged that the post was created specifically to address the complaints of left-wing groups that were complaining that the Obama administration was being heavy-handed in its deportation and incarceration immigration policy.”

High Tech Visas Double Under One Proposal

“A Senate immigration plan would dramatically increase the number of high-skilled foreign workers allowed into the country and give permanent legal status to an unlimited number of students who earn graduate degrees from U.S. universities in science, technology, engineering or math, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The agreement would be a major victory for the tech industry, which has backed an intense lobbying campaign on Capitol Hill in recent months arguing that Google, Facebook, Microsoft and other companies are having trouble finding qualified workers because of visa limits,” the Washington Post reports.

“The expansion of the visas, known as H1Bs, is one element of talks among a bipartisan group of eight senators, whose legislation is expected to serve as the basis for a deal between Congress and the White House to retool the immigration system. The number of visas available would approximately double from the current limit of 65,000 per year.”

Sen. Leahy Says Amnesty Taking Too Long

“The Senate Judiciary Committee will not likely mark up a comprehensive immigration overhaul package until May because the bipartisan Senate group working on drafting a bill has taken longer than expected, Chairman Patrick J. Leahy said. ‘For months I have urged the president to send his proposal for comprehensive immigration reform to the Senate,’ the Vermont Democrat said in opening statement placed in the record during a committee immigration hearing today,” Roll Call reports.

“‘I have favored an open and transparent process during which all 18 Senators serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee will have the opportunity to participate and to propose or oppose ideas for reform,’ Leahy said. ‘The Majority Leader has agreed that we need regular order in the consideration of comprehensive immigration reform. This process will take time. It will not be easy. There will be strongly-held, differing points of view.’ Leahy’s comments come the day after six Republican Judiciary members, including ranking member Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, cautioned Leahy against rushing the bill through committee.”

Study Shows Not All Immigrants Assimilate Quickly

“South Americans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans are settling among the existing U.S. population more readily than Mexicans, the nation’s largest Hispanic group, a trend with implications for politics, the economy and other areas of daily life,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“South Americans, including Argentines and Venezuelans, have the highest levels of education and are the least segregated from other ethnic groups in the U.S., even if they are more recent arrivals, according to the study.”

“Every group except Mexicans has experienced a substantial decline in residential segregation from whites since 1990, according to the most common measure of segregation, the ‘dissimilarity index,’ which measures the distribution of two groups in a neighborhood and how much one group is over- or under-represented in relation to the other.”

Who Benefits from Guest Worker Programs? Not Us, Say Workers

“In the peak of the harvest season, California needs some 400,000 farmhands, and usually 70 percent of them are undocumented immigrants,” said Rayne Pegg of the California Farm Bureau Federation.

“At the national level, half of the million workers that put fruit and vegetables on the tables of American families lack work papers, says FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform.”

“Mexican laborers at the California Mushroom Farm, for instance, fear that with a [new guest worker program], new arrivals will cause them to lose benefits they have earned over the years, such as health insurance and paid vacations. In Oxnard, 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Los Angeles, Mexican worker Reinaldo Arevalo, 61 and with bushy mustach, said a program for temporary workers would not help people like him at all.”
