{"id":2908,"date":"2013-04-02T14:38:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T18:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/?p=2908"},"modified":"2017-08-14T09:32:16","modified_gmt":"2017-08-14T13:32:16","slug":"fair-alert-big-business-labor-unions-sell-out-american-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/2013\/04\/02\/fair-alert-big-business-labor-unions-sell-out-american-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"FAIR Alert: Big Business &#038; Labor Unions Sell Out American Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/2013\/04\/02\/fair-alert-big-business-labor-unions-sell-out-american-workers\/labor-business_guest_worker_agreement_412013\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2909\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2909 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px 20px;\" title=\"Labor-Business_guest_worker_agreement_412013\" src=\"http:\/\/live-immigrationreform.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Labor-Business_guest_worker_agreement_412013-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"Big Business &amp; Labor Unions Reach &quot;Guest Worker&quot; Agreement\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Labor-Business_guest_worker_agreement_412013-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Labor-Business_guest_worker_agreement_412013-100x57.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.immigrationreform.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Labor-Business_guest_worker_agreement_412013.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Yesterday, an <a href=\"http:\/\/fairus.org\/_blog\/amnesty_updates\/post\/Guest_Worker_Agreement_from_the_AFL-CIOUS_Chamber\">outline of the AFL-CIO and Chamber of Commerce&#8217;s deal<\/a> on a new &#8220;guest worker&#8221; program was leaked to the public via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/133196527\/New-Future-Flow-Program\">Ezra Klein<\/a> of the <em>Washington Post.<\/em> The deal, which sells out U.S. workers, <strong>shows the lengths to which special interests will go to craft an immigration deal on the backs of unemployed and struggling Americans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the deal creates a <em>new W immigrant visa program <\/em>that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allows employers to bring in 20,000 to 200,000 foreign workers each year in <strong>&#8220;lesser-skilled&#8221; occupations, including hospitality, janitorial, retail, construction, etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Creates a loophole allowing businesses to exceed the 200,000 cap by paying a &#8220;premium&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Allows foreign workers to <strong>petition for green cards after only one year<\/strong>, making them a permanent part of the U.S. labor force and NOT guest workers<\/li>\n<li>Allows <strong>professional recruiters to market jobs to foreign nationals<\/strong>, risking steep fees and abuse (while the requirements for recruiting American workers for those jobs remain unknown).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most importantly, however, Americans need to know that while the Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO are selling this new foreign worker program as necessary to fill &#8220;shortages&#8221; in the U.S. labor market, <strong>the deal allows workers to change employers and then stay in the U.S<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By definition, this means that the new foreign worker program is not designed to fix any <em>claimed shortages<\/em> in the labor market. Instead, the AFL-CIO and Chamber have designed it to simply bring more foreign workers into the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This deal was negotiated as part of the Senate &#8220;Gang of Eight&#8217;s&#8221;\u00a0immigration reform plan. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Call Senate Leadership NOW and tell them you oppose bringing in more foreign workers when 22 million Americans are either unemployed or underemployed!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell them:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. U.S. immigration policy should prioritize the needs of <strong>Americans first.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2. The U.S. doesn\u2019t need more guest workers\u2014the government already admits over 800,000 guest workers each year\u2014REGARDLESS OF UNEMPLOYMENT.<\/p>\n<p>3. Americans need jobs, not new foreign worker programs that create unfair competition and drive down wages.<\/p>\n<p>4. Jobs in the construction, hospitality, retail and other industries are good jobs that Americans will do for a living wage.<\/p>\n<p>5.
