Rand Paul: Boehner Has the Power to Kill Amnesty

“Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told Breitbart News that he believes House Speaker John Boehner has the power to kill the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” amnesty bill once and for all,” Breitbart reported.

“‘I think we should do something,’ Paul said about immigration in a phone interview with Breitbart News. ‘There’s 11 million people here who are undocumented. If we do nothing, we’ll get another 11 million. Would I say is, would they do it without agreeing to conference on the Senate bill? I believe the Speaker has that much power in the House. I think he could say we are going to put forward an immigration bill but it’s not going to be like the Senate bill, it’s going to be more narrowly focused. It’s going to try to fix border security and expand work visas so we can have more people here legally.'”

Pelosi May Introduce Amnesty Bill

“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is spearheading a plan to advance comprehensive immigration reform in the chamber.

The California Democrat’s strategy includes introducing legislation combining the comprehensive bill that passed the Senate Judiciary Committee in May with a bipartisan border-security bill from the House Homeland Security Committee, according to sources familiar with the plans,”
Politico reports.

“The strategy was detailed at a meeting hosted by Pelosi last week with top House Democrats and several immigration-rights advocates, the sources said. The plan would be to publicly release the bill timed to the Oct. 5 National Day of Action that is meant to mobilize grass-roots support and pressure the House Republican leadership to take up [amnesty]that includes a pathway to citizenship.”

Smuggling Routes Shift to Texas

“The number of immigrants detained in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley border sector outpaced the historic leader, the Tucson sector, by more than 30,000. Those numbers are an imperfect measure of the overall flow of migrants, but most of the growth has involved Central American immigrants, who often take the more direct route to the U.S. through Texas,” says the AP.

“Immigrants typically die in Brooks County trying to circumvent a Border Patrol checkpoint. They’re usually dropped off with guides south of the checkpoint and forced to hike for two or three days to a pickup spot north of the checkpoint.”

More Immigrants Moving to Mexico

“Mexico, whose economic woes have pushed millions of people north, is increasingly becoming an immigrant destination. The country’s documented foreign-born population nearly doubled between 2000 and 2010, and officials now say the pace is accelerating as broad changes in the global economy create new dynamics of migration,” the New York Times writes.

“Rising wages in China and higher transportation costs have made Mexican manufacturing highly competitive again, with some projections suggesting it is already cheaper than China for many industries serving the American market. Europe is sputtering, pushing workers away. And while Mexico’s economy is far from trouble free, its growth easily outpaced the giants of the hemisphere – the United States, Canada and Brazil – in 2011 and 2012, according to International Monetary Fund data, making the country more attractive to fortune seekers worldwide.”
